One man’s trash is another’s set of wheels: Third Street Ministries, Cycle Therapy provide refurbished bikes to those without transportation: by Kevin Myrick, Rome News - Tribune 09.13.09

Third Street Ministries is helping those who can’t afford transportation around Rome and Floyd County , with an assist from the professionals at Cycle Therapy
on Broad Street .  The program takes bicycles donated to the ministry and turns them into a set of wheels for those without, according to Beau Gordon, a lay minister with Third Street Ministries.  Gordon said the bicycle donation program allows people who would otherwise have problems getting around town to have reliable transportation. “This is pretty much the only way these people can get around,” Gordon said. “We’ve been able to distribute six bicycles over the year so far.”

Two of the bikes went to Heather and Daniel Wyatt, a husband and wife who had to walk wherever they were going.  “It’s wonderful that people like ourselves
are
being able to experience the love of God with helping hands,” Heather Wyatt said.  “I’m glad that God blessed us,” Daniel Wyatt said. “We’ve been praying for someone to help.”

The program wouldn’t work, however, if it weren’t for Cycle Therapy owner Trey Smith, who does all of the repairs for free.
He’s taken broken-down bicycles and restored them into working transportation, which he said is the “most efficient way to get around.”

“To make the bicycles functional is usually fairly easy,” Smith said. “We’ve had a 10-speed where only four gears worked, but it’s usually pretty easy to make
them into reliable transportation.”

Third Street Ministries is looking for more bicycles to be donated, and Gordon said they’ll also take any items that can be used to help the homeless.
